About Us

Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals Inc., (HRBMP), is an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). With a strong legacy of preparing and propelling members to their highest place of purpose and employment, the support and connection among HRBMP members is legendary. With more than 40 years since its inception, it remains true to its calling — to be of service in significant ways.

The organization is comprised of TV reporters, print reporters, radio producers, editors, news photographers, videographers, editors, educators, graphic artists, public relations professionals, marketing and advertising professionals, media managers, content creators, digital journalists, freelancers, students and corporate partners. Membership includes professionals and students throughout Hampton Roads VA and Northeastern NC. Its expanded membership also includes alumni and affiliate members located throughout the U.S.

HRBMP History

Established first as Tidewater Media Professionals in 1982, HRBMP has served as a diligent liaison between the community and the media. HRBMP was once known for its former signature program, Echoes of Excellence, which later became The Excel Awards.

The organization remains a consistent presence in the region by inspiring the lives of the next generation through different programs like the Bryon Burney Community Journalism Academy. Members recognize that the survival and advancement of the organization is dependent upon younger professionals and students understanding the significance and critical need for organizations such as HRBMP and NABJ to continue.

To date, three former members of HRBMP’s local leadership team have served as national NABJ presidents – Past President Arthur Fennell, Former Treasurer Herb Lowe and Past President Barbara Ciara who served as president of NABJ and president of UNITY: Journalists of Color.

The “little chapter that could” will continue to play a big part in the advancement, support, and celebration of racial diversity in media-centered career fields and throughout our community. “Get to know us … Learn to use us.”
