Phyllis Terrell is the Director of Communications for the Fort Monroe Authority in Hampton, Virginia, whose mission is to preserve historic Fort Monroe as a national monument and to transition this former Army post to a vibrant, urban park that creates cultural and recreational experiences. 2019 marked the 400th anniversary of a number of significant events in Virginia including the landing of the first Africans in English North America at Point Comfort (now Fort Monroe). The landing of Africans at Point Comfort set in motion this nation’s ongoing journey toward freedom and equality. The events in 2019 garnered national as well as international media coverage.

Phyllis started her well-established career in the travel industry with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, holding numerous sales and marketing positions at the foundation including the Director of Strategic Alliances and Business Development where she managed partnerships with major airlines, credit card companies, as well as regional attractions.

Phyllis currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Williamsburg Regional Library, and she is a member of the African American Advisory Council for VA250—established to commemorate Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of American independence.  She has also served on the boards of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Williamsburg Hotel/Motel Association, Williamsburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, and the National Council of Attractions of the Travel Industry Association of America. Phyllis is also a member of the Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and serves as the Chapter Treasurer.
