Larry Rubama

Larry Rubama is a sports columnist for The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press newspapers. He received a track scholarship to Ohio University where he earned All-Mid-American Conference honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism.

He began his journalism career in 1991 at WOLF-AM radio station in Syracuse, N.Y. where he covered Syracuse University basketball and football. In 1993, he became a sportswriter for The Journal-Gazette newspaper in Fort Wayne, Ind. where he covered Purdue University basketball and football, minor league baseball and high school sports.

Rubama joined the Pilot sports department staff in 1999. He has covered high school, college and pro sports for more than 25 years and recently added sports columnist duties. He has won numerous awards from the Virginia Press Association, Norfolk Sports Club and Hampton Roads Sports Commission. In 2024, he was inducted into the Hampton Roads Sports Media Hall of Fame and the Old School Legends Basketball Hall of Fame.
